If you’ve been following me for awhile, you know just how much I love sci-fi and fantasy. When preparing for this blog, I tried to pick a mix of popular books and less well-known novels, so you get some new recommendations instead of the same old (yet amazing) fantasy/sci-fi books.
Without further ado, here are five fantasy and sci-fi recommendations!

1. The Skinjacker Trilogy by Neal Shusterman
Probably the least well-known series on this list, The Skinjacker Trilogy follows two characters, Nick and Allie, who are killed in a freak accident and arrive in this strange world—a realm between life and death. The characters in this series are amazing. It’s whimsical, it’s fun, and parts of it are quite creepy. I don’t remember every detail (I haven’t read it in a few years), but definitely a series I’d re-read. Perhaps I’ll pick it up over the summer!

2. The Red Rising Series by Pierce Brown
I’ve been talking about this series quite a lot recently. I know there are mixed opinions on these books, and this author, but I absolutely love everything this series encompasses. To me, these books embody the traditional sci-fi genre—they’re set in space, the world-building is immaculate, and it’s a classic rebels-try-to-take-down-a-tyrannical-government storyline. The characters are witty, passionate, and brave—all the traits well written heroes and heroines possess. Brown certainly knows how to create captivating characters readers can get invested in.

3. The Legend Series by Marie Lu
I read this series back in 2019, so it’s been awhile, and yet I distinctly remember being invested in the characters and enjoying the story. I gave the second and third books in the series five stars, and specifically recall the ending of the third book blowing me away. I’ve yet to get around to the fourth, and final, book in the series, but I hope to get through it this May.

4. The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary E. Pearson
I read this book for my literature class last year. When I picked this book up, lockdowns had just begun. This story provided a great distraction from the chaos of March 2020. Yet the main character’s struggles, and the overall story, reminded me a little of the situations going on in the real world at the time, not in a bad way, but in a hopeful way, if any of that makes sense. The ending was especially touching and is the reason I still think about this book. If you’re looking for a unique read that asks thought-provoking questions and has gorgeous writing, definitely give this one a read.

5. The Illuminae Files by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
All right, peeps. I was trying very hard to avoid including super popular books (Six of Crows, The Lunar Chronicles, etc.) because I know a majority of fantasy/sci-fi fans have already read them, but I had to include The Illuminae Files for two reasons 1. People don’t talk about them enough and 2. They surprised me more than any sci-fi series I’ve ever read! The formatting of these books is unique and aesthetically pleasing. The characters are awesome and the storyline has a ton of twists and turns. It’s a masterfully crafted series, so definitely check it out if you love space worlds, rogue AIs, and epic adventures.
Thank you for reading this post! I hope you check out some of these recommendations. If you enjoy my content, please consider subscribing so you can stay updated every time I post. It’s been a pleasure writing for you, and until next time—stay weird and stay writing. - Lexi
